The key to creating something worthwhile, through art, entrepreneurship, or content, is deep work. aka reaching a flow state void of interruption or distraction.

To make your best art calls for undivided attention - so you can do the very difficult task of making something new. Of interpreting your world of senses into a creation.

It looks different for each of us - whether it’s blasting music or utter silence, surrounded by peers or operating as one - flow state is a period of peace and concentration, and I aspire to achieve it constantly.

So here are my personal commandments, if you will, to achieving flow state:

  • work on what you love. this was the arguably the MOST important commandment to get right. when I have intrinsic motivation to execute on an idea, when I’m truly excited about realizing a vision, I know this is worth my time, and it’s much easier to spend my time here

  • make time for the creative pursuit. it must be scheduled, honored, and prioritized. art and creativity are just as meaningful as “work,” even if society deems otherwise. creativity anchors you to the child within

  • done > perfect. a mentor once advised me “QUANTITY OVER QUALITY” - counter-intuitive, but as in the photography class experiment from University of Florida, putting in the reps will yield much more progress than endlessly speculating on perfection

  • let it be. sometimes, the path is not clear, whatever the venture may be. in the instance of a painting, I often don’t know how the final piece will look. rather, it’s a step-by-step journey, with each layer clueing me in to the next. so let go of a rigid end goal and allow the alternate directions appear

  • it’s not that serious! remove yourself from the unnecessary pressure you place on your shoulders. appreciate the presentness in the act of creativity

I love the flow state. It makes no room for overthinking or stressing or hassling - it is pure doing. And the best stuff comes out of those chapters of creation. Wishing you many hours spent in flow state this week!

and until next week~

P.S. As an artist, editing content puts me out of the flow state. That's why I'm building Vyra - an AI video editing tool that gets you from idea to final video, faster. If you're looking to preserve your flow, I'd love for you to try it :)
